Two ratios cover ~95% of Meta inventory: 1:1 (1080 x 1080) and 9:16 (1080 x 1920). Ship those two files first. Add 4:5 (1080 x 1350) only if you have single-image Feed ads where the extra height matters.

The Advantage+ Auto-Crop Trap

Advantage+ Creative is on by default and will auto-crop your 1:1 into 9:16 for Stories/Reels, usually cutting the wrong third (AdStellar). Ship the 9:16 yourself; Advantage+ leaves purpose-built assets alone. Ad Set Studio outputs the 1:1 and 9:16 from a single product photo at the exact pixel counts above.

Facebook Feed: 1:1 vs 4:5

Ads Manager defaults to 1:1, but Meta's own docs recommend 4:5 (1080 x 1350) for single Feed ads. Taller frame = more mobile real estate = ~1% higher CTR. Use 4:5 for Feed-only; use 1:1 when reusing across Feed, Marketplace, Right Column, Messenger (Ads Uploader).

Carousels

2 to 10 cards, and all cards must share the same aspect ratio. Mix ratios and Meta uses card 1's ratio, cropping the rest (Meta Carousel doc). Only the first card serves in Right Column, and carousels do not serve in Messenger Inbox at all.

Stories vs Reels: Same Canvas, Different Safe Zones

Both run at 1440 x 2560 (9:16). The trap: treating them as one placement. Per Ads Uploader, "designing for Stories and running on Reels means your bottom content gets buried under likes, comments, and captions."

Safe ZoneStoriesReels
Top reserved14%14%
Bottom reserved20% (~340px)35% (~595px)
Side reservedNegligible6% each side
Effective canvas~66% of height~51% of height

The Reels bottom 35% stacks profile handle, caption, hashtags, audio attribution, like/comment/share/save icons, and the seek bar. Anything below the 65% mark on a Reels canvas is functionally invisible.

Edge Placements (Marketplace, Right Column, Audience Network, Messenger)

Roughly 4-6% of total spend for most DTC accounts. If you already shipped 1:1 and 9:16 for Feed and Stories, you have free coverage here. The placement-specific gotchas:

  • Marketplace: 1080 x 1080 (1:1). Anything else gets cropped to the grid (Hootsuite).
  • Right Column (desktop only): Source at 1080 x 1080 but displays at just 254 x 133 px. No text in the image. Only the first carousel card serves here (AdNabu).
  • Audience Network Native / Banner: 1080 x 1080 (1:1) inside third-party publisher apps.
  • Audience Network Interstitial / Rewarded Video: 1080 x 1920 (9:16), full-screen between content.
  • Messenger Inbox: 1080 x 1080 (1:1). Carousels do NOT serve here (Two Owls).
  • Messenger Stories: 1080 x 1920 (9:16). Same ~14% top/bottom safe zone as FB Stories.

In-Stream Video

1920 x 1080 (16:9) or 1080 x 1080 (1:1), 4 GB max. Full video specs (length, codec, frame rate) are in our Facebook Video Ad Sizes 2026 post.

Universal Rules

  • Max image: 30 MB, JPG or PNG (Meta Ads Guide)
  • Max video: 4 GB, MP4 / MOV / GIF (MP4 H.264 is the default)
  • Target JPG: under 5 MB at 80-90% quality (Ryze AI 2026)
  • The 20% text rule was retired Sept 7, 2020 (AdWeek). Text-heavy ads are no longer auto-throttled in delivery. They still drag CTR via user skim, but that's a creative problem, not an algorithm penalty.

Two Gotchas Meta Won't Tell You

1. One-pixel-off rejections are still happening in 2026. Per WordStream, ads get silently bounced for being one pixel off the recommended size with no error message. Images below the minimum pixel count also trigger an automated low-quality flag per Strike Social. Ship at the exact recommended count, not close enough.

2. Design rule for surviving any crop: keep your hero element inside the center 80% of any canvas. 81.8% of FB users are mobile-only, and brands shipping native 9:16 (vs auto-cropped 1:1) see up to 21% lower CPA and 37% higher CTR in Stories (LeadEnforce).

Frequently Asked Questions

10 cards max, 2 minimum. All cards must be the same aspect ratio. If you mix ratios, Meta uses the first card's ratio and crops the rest, which usually breaks the composition of cards 2 through 10. Stick to 1:1 (1080 x 1080) for carousel cards unless every single card was designed for 4:5.
