4:5 Aspect Ratio: Pixel Sizes, Where It Works, and What Live Meta Ads Use (2026)
4:5 in pixels is 1440 x 1800 for Meta ads, or any width x 1.25. Why it only shows whole in the feed, and the 4:5 + 9:16 pair live advertisers ship most.

4:5 is a portrait shape: 1080 x 1350 pixels, or 1440 x 1800 for a Facebook or Instagram Feed ad. Any width times 1.25 gives the 4:5 height. Our read after measuring 493 live Meta ads: 4:5 is the tallest shape the feed shows whole and the wrong shape almost everywhere else, so make it big, keep the important parts away from the edges, and ship a 9:16 next to it.
| 4:5 size | Where you'll use it |
|---|---|
| 1080 x 1350 | The standard size, and the most common 4:5 in the live ads we measured |
| 1440 x 1800 | Meta's recommendation for Facebook and Instagram Feed ads |
| 600 x 750 | The smallest 4:5 Facebook Feed accepts |
| 720 x 900 | LinkedIn's recommended vertical image |
| 960 x 1200 | Google Demand Gen's recommended vertical image |
| 2160 x 2700 | "4K" 4:5, keeping 4K UHD's 2160 px short side |
| 2400 x 3000 | 8 x 10 inch print at 300 ppi |
To check a size, divide both sides by their greatest common divisor: 1440 x 1800 reduces to 4 x 5. Anything else is a different shape, even when it looks close.
4:5 is the most of the feed you can get
The reason to make a 4:5 at all is height. At the same width it's 25% taller than a square, and it's the tallest image Meta lets you run in Facebook and Instagram Feed ads. Go taller and you're in a different placement: 3:4 is for organic Instagram posts, 9:16 is for Stories and Reels.

Height as a share of a full 9:16 screen

Meta's Ads Guide has recommended 1440 x 1800 for Facebook Feed since late 2024 and for Instagram Feed images since 2026. Kin's bundle ad is built at exactly that size: one line of offer, big type, and the logo above the bottom 10% a square crop would take. Bigger files don't buy you anything, since Meta's recommendation stops there. Meta publishes no results showing 4:5 beats 1:1. The "1% higher CTR" figure that gets passed around has no source we could find. The case for 4:5 is the extra height, nothing more.

Only have a square? The free Meta Ad Resizer turns a 1:1 ad into 4:5 or 9:16 by extending the background instead of cropping it.

That extra height is also the catch. The feed is the only Meta placement built for 4:5, yet the same file still runs in Stories, Reels and square slots unless you give Meta something else. Meta's aspect-ratio page says it fills the gaps with "padding, media expansion, cropping and additional AI-enabled features", and doesn't say which one you'll get.

Watch the wordmark at the bottom of Forsyth's ad

In Stories and Reels a 1080 x 1350 image covers 70% of a 1080 x 1920 screen, with 285 px for Meta to fill above and below. Reels then lays captions and the CTA over the bottom 35% (Meta's safe-zone guidance), which lands on the lowest 387 px of your image. In Marketplace and the right column the spec is square, and a square crop takes 135 px off each end. Forsyth's wordmark sits in exactly the strip both of those remove. Its ad has run for 970 days anyway, but we'd rather not leave the brand name to chance.
Instagram's profile grid does a milder version: tiles have been 3:4 since January 2025, so a 4:5 post loses about 34 px from each side in the grid only. The free safe-zone checker draws all of these lines on your own file. Off Meta, 4:5 travels well: Threads, LinkedIn, X and Google Demand Gen all take it, and Pinterest shows it whole. TikTok doesn't list it.
Live ads use 4:5 less than the advice suggests
Given those trade-offs, we wanted to see what advertisers actually upload. On October 9, 2026 we measured the creative in 493 active US Meta ads from 278 advertisers. 9:16 led with 62%, the square came second with 18.5%, and 4:5 was third at 15%.

493 ads. 4:5 is third, about 1 in 7 ads. 9:16 leads because most ads are video.
9:16 leads because most of these ads are video, and 242 of the 305 9:16 ads were. Among image ads the square still wins. The direction is changing, though: 4:5 is 19.6% of ads started in the last 90 days and 8.1% of ads running 180 days or more. Meta's Feed spec topped out at 1:1 until mid-2024, so older ads were built square, and a one-day snapshot can't separate that from which ads survive.
These shares also undercount 4:5. The Ad Library preview shows one asset per ad, so an advertiser who uploads a 4:5 for Feed and a 9:16 for Stories gets counted once, as whichever the preview shows. To see both versions you have to look at the ads where the Library lists every card.
Ship the 4:5 next to a 9:16, and lay each one out
In the 146 multi-asset ads, where every card is visible, the most common combination was a 4:5 plus a 9:16, in 40 ads, just ahead of a square plus a 9:16 in 36. That's the setup we'd copy: the 4:5 takes the feed, the 9:16 takes Stories and Reels, and Meta has nothing left to pad or crop.

The part worth copying is that neither brand cropped one file into the other. A centered 4:5 cut of Dose's 9:16 loses "3-pack for", the first line of the offer. Its real 4:5 re-spaces the copy so the whole offer fits. The Farmer's Dog set its headline larger and moved the dog and food pack. Both pairs have run for more than six months.

4:5 aspect ratio FAQ
What is 4:5 in pixels?
1080 x 1350, or 1440 x 1800 for Facebook and Instagram Feed ads. Any width times 1.25 gives the 4:5 height.
Is 1080x1350 a 4:5 ratio?
Yes. Divide both sides by 270 and you get 4 x 5. 1080 x 1440 is 3:4, a taller shape.
Is 4:5 the same as 8x10?
Yes, 8 x 10 inches is exactly 4:5 (2400 x 3000 px at 300 ppi). 11 x 14 and 5 x 7 aren't, so a 4:5 file gets cropped at those print sizes.
Is 4:5 better than 1:1 for ads?
Meta recommends 4:5 for single-image Feed ads, but publishes no results comparing the two. Use 1:1 if the same file runs in Marketplace or the right column.
Can I use 4:5 for Instagram Stories?
Meta accepts it but fills the top and bottom of the screen for you. Upload a 9:16 if you want the full screen. More in our Instagram Story size guide.
What is 4K in 4:5?
There's no standard. 2160 x 2700 keeps 4K UHD's short side and 3072 x 3840 keeps its long side. For Meta ads, 1440 x 1800 is the recommended size.
Before you export a 4:5
- 1Export at 1440 x 1800. Facebook's floor is 600 x 750; Instagram wants at least 500 px wide.
- 2Keep the logo and offer inside the center square (the middle 1440 x 1440).
- 3Keep text out of the bottom 516 px (387 px on a 1080 x 1350 file) in case Reels centers it.
- 4Check the ratio by dividing by the greatest common divisor. Instagram allows 1% off 4:5, Facebook 3%.
- 5Upload a 9:16 version in the same ad.
How we got this
Specs come from Meta's Ads Guide and Business Help Center, the Instagram Help Center, Meta's developer blog (Threads) and the LinkedIn, X, Google Ads, Pinterest and TikTok ad spec pages, checked October 10, 2026. The ad sample is the Meta Ad Library on October 9, 2026: active US ads, first two result pages for 18 keyword searches, 669 ads, minus 153 catalog ads and 23 with no usable creative, leaving 493 from 278 advertisers. Ratios are measured from the preview creative (a multi-asset ad's first card) within 2.5% of exact. Two health-advertorial Pages supply 21 of the 74 4:5 ads; without them 4:5 is 11.2%. Days running count to October 9 and say nothing about performance. Crop pixels are our arithmetic on a 1080 x 1350 file.
