Meta Ads Updates: August 2026 Changelog for Media Buyers
Every Meta ads change from July 12 to August 7, 2026: reporting breakdowns going dark, Marketing API v26.0, the official ads MCP server, AI rewriting text inside your ad images, a CPM benchmark sign flip, and what to do about each.

Between July 12 and August 7, Meta opened Ads Manager to AI agents through a first-party MCP server, shipped an API version that removes placements without telling you, started rewriting the headline text baked into your ad images, posted earnings that price the average ad 12 percent higher while the largest public CPM tracker measured July 13 percent cheaper, and switched off three reporting breakdowns for every account that never opted in. If a dashboard you trust has been showing zeroes since Thursday, start with that last one.
This is the second edition of the monthly Meta ads changelog. The July edition covered June 1 through July 11; this one picks up from July 12. Entries are dated and end with what to do about them. The next one lands in early September.
If you only act on five things from this window:
- Since August 6, the device, hourly, and frequency reporting breakdowns return empty results on accounts that never opted in. The requests still return 200, so nothing alerts.
- Advantage+ now rewrites the headline text baked into your ad images (spotted live July 27). Fill out Branding or opt out per creative.
- Marketing API v26.0 shipped July 29 with version auto-upgrade. Special-ad-category ad sets now error without an explicit Advantage+ audience flag.
- Two Meta-confirmed Ads Delivery incidents hit July 16 and July 19. Annotate both in your reporting.
- Muse Image still has not reached Advantage+, and HubSpot support in Instant Forms booking missed its early-August date.
July 16: Meta ships an official ads MCP server
Meta released a first-party MCP server at mcp.facebook.com/ads. Any AI agent can now read reporting, create and manage campaigns, and work catalogs through one sanctioned endpoint instead of a wrapper API or a browser script. It is read and write, not read-only. Access for your own ad accounts is standard; agencies touching another business's data need Advanced Access on the new ads_mcp_management permission, which goes through App Review.
What to do: if you run any AI tooling against your account, this replaces the unofficial paths that get accounts flagged. Enable the Ads and monetization use case in your app dashboard and test against your own account first. Agencies should start the App Review queue before a client asks in Q4. We covered the buyer side of agent access in our guide to connecting Claude to Meta ads.
July 16 and 19: Two confirmed outages, and the ones that were not
Meta's status history confirms two Ads Delivery incidents in the window. July 16 was acknowledged for 2 hours 7 minutes, but Meta's first public post already described it as "recovering from an earlier outage," so the real start was earlier and unpublished. July 19 ran 2 hours 32 minutes and was the advertising limb of a platform-wide failure that logged 23,000+ Downdetector reports; buyers reported they could not pause campaigns while spend continued.
The July 21 publishing-error wave and the July 22 frozen-spend threads have no matching status page entries, so treat them as unverified. August 1 through 7 shows zero confirmed incidents on any Meta product. What to do: annotate July 16 and 19 in every reporting view, screenshot delivery data if you spent through them, and file for ad credits. Before blaming creative for a campaign that died that week, check whether its collapse matches the incident timestamps.
Rolled out quietly: audience labels and a ROAS Goal middle lane
Audiences were reorganized around labels on July 16, with no announcement: custom audiences now group under Customer labels (High value, Recent purchasers, At risk, and so on) and Engaged Audiences labels. One label per audience, lookalikes and saved audiences cannot be labeled at all, and the labels gate eligibility for value rules. Then on July 20, the ROAS Goal bid strategy became selectable with volume optimization as well as value optimization.
What to do: label your customer lists now so value rules unlock when you want them, and do not confuse labels with the audience segments in Advertising Settings; they are separate systems. If your account lost volume when you moved to value optimization, ROAS Goal on maximize conversions is the middle lane worth one ad set of testing.
July 27: A video-first Facebook test, and the holiday bundle
Meta began testing a Facebook app that opens directly into full-screen video, with the Feed demoted to a tab. Rollout targets video-heavy international markets later in 2026, the US possibly in 2027, with a user opt-out. Feed placements (1:1, 4:5) and video feed placements (9:16) are bought separately, so if the test wins, the impression mix shifts toward vertical.
The same day, Meta published its small-business holiday package: a free Holiday Insights Center built on a 14,473-shopper survey across 18 countries, plus a playbook. The sleeper items are in the tool list underneath: Meta Ads AI Connectors for managing campaigns from outside AI tools (the buyer-side twin of the MCP server above), an Enhanced Pixel that auto-includes product and page details, and one-click Conversions API setup.
What to do: if your creative library is square-first, start cutting 9:16 variants now and watch your placement breakdown for video-feed share drift over the next two quarters. Skim the holiday benchmarks for your vertical before you lock Q4 budgets.
July 28: Advantage+ starts rewriting the text inside your images
Jon Loomer documented an updated Advantage+ creative Text step, with screenshots from his own account dated July 27: Meta ingests your uploaded image and rewrites the headline text on the image itself, preserving the font, colors, banner, and layout. Eight variants, pre-selected. He calls the text quality a significant upgrade, and unlike June's mangled-variation horror stories, this one keeps your design intact and only changes the words.
This is exactly the capability Meta promised from Muse Image, yet nobody, including Loomer, has attributed it to Muse, and Meta itself kept Muse in the future tense on its earnings call two days later. Either Muse is quietly powering it unannounced, or the pre-Muse stack got much better right before Muse arrives.
What to do: the variants are on by default. If your images carry baked-in text, either fill out the Branding section under Identity (logo, fonts, colors, tone, restricted words) so Meta rewrites inside your rules, or opt out per creative. A rewritten headline that contradicts your landing page is now a failure mode you have to check for in ad previews.
The algorithm wants volume. Give it yours, not its own.
Every change this month points the same direction: Meta generates more of the creative unless you supply it. AdMakeAI keeps the volume coming from your side of the fence: generate on-brand ad images you approve before they spend a cent, and track what competitors keep running so you know which angles are worth making.
July 29: API corner, v26.0 and the version clock trap
Graph API and Marketing API v26.0 shipped July 29, alongside Marketing API version auto-upgrade. Four changes that will break real pipelines:
- Special ad categories now require an explicit audience flag. Housing, employment, and credit ad sets must set targeting_automation.advantage_audience explicitly or the create call errors. This is the change most likely to break third-party tools at auto-upgrade, and at least it fails loudly.
- Two placements removed, in opposite styles. Instagram Explore Feed now returns an error when specified. Messenger Stories' story value is silently stripped from messenger_positions: you send it, get a 200, and the ad set comes back without it.
- Delivery estimates gutted. daily_outcomes_curve, budget_guardrail, and estimate_dau are removed with no replacement. Planning tools built on them just go quiet.
- July 21: real webhooks for ad accounts. A new effective_status field pushes delivery-status flips, plus a unified ads subscription carrying 88 notification types. Meta's pitch is retiring polling loops. The reference docs have not caught up to the announcement, so verify you receive payloads before ripping out a poller.
Behind all of it, Graph API and Marketing API run separate deprecation clocks for the same version number. v24.0 lives until February 2028 on the Graph API but dies October 6, 2026 on the Marketing API, and expired versions do not error; calls are silently executed as the next version. On October 27, most v26.0 removals extend to every remaining version, including unversioned calls, so pinning to v25.0 buys three extra weeks, not a strategy.
What to do: grep your integrations for v24.0 now, always send the Advantage+ audience flag on special-ad-category ad sets, strip Explore Feed from hardcoded placement arrays, and re-read what the API actually saved after writes, because Meta has largely stopped erroring.
July 29: The earnings numbers that price your Q4
Q2 earnings: ad revenue $59.4 billion, up 27 percent, on impressions up 14 percent and an average price per ad up 12 percent year over year. A flat budget buys roughly 12 percent less than it did last summer. Advantage+ passed a $75 billion annual run rate, and 9 million small businesses now use at least one AI creative tool (widely misreported as 8 million advertisers; the transcript says 9 million small businesses).
The strategic item is a new ranking system, Meta Generative Recommender, which uses LLMs to reason about the ad and the user together instead of scoring every ad individually. Combined with its upgraded user models and GEM ranking, Meta credits the stack with an 8.3 percent increase in ad clicks and a 15.7 percent conversion uplift on Facebook. What to do: a ranking system that reads your creative rewards distinct angles and punishes repetition harder. Threads ads also completed their global rollout this quarter, if you have been waiting on availability.
August 4: Fund your ad account with USDC
Meta began accepting USDC to fund ad accounts via MetaMask, Coinbase, and Binance, with a partner converting to local currency; Meta never custodies the crypto. What to do: irrelevant for most US and EU buyers, useful if you operate from a market where card payments to Meta fail or currency controls bite. It is a funding path, not a discount.
August 6: Three reporting breakdowns went dark
The change the July edition flagged for this date shipped on schedule. The impression_device, hourly-stats, and frequency_value breakdowns now return results only for ad accounts that opted in, and the device restriction applies to any breakdown combination that includes it, so a routine device-by-placement query dies too. Requests return 200 with an empty data array. No error, no warning. Dashboards render zeroes that look like a performance collapse.
Meta's own documentation disagrees with itself on the escape hatch: the breakdowns page says an asynchronous report job retrieves the data anyway, while the newer changelog entry says non-enabled accounts get no results "whether synchronous or asynchronous." Trust the newer page. There is no help center article for the opt-in; the toggle lives under Additional Breakdowns in Ads Manager's reporting view. For agencies, an enablement endpoint at POST /act_<ID>/insights/feature-settings enables per account programmatically: enable-only, no disable, data appears within about a day, and feature names differ from breakdown names.
What to do: pull a device or hourly report for August 6 and 7 right now. If it comes back empty on an account that had data on the 5th, opt in and the history backfills. If you build or buy reporting tools, add a guard that treats an empty 200 as a signal rather than writing zeroes into a table; a day in, no connector had shipped a fix, because silent failures surface on reporting lag.
What CPMs actually did in July
Superads' benchmark tracker put the median Facebook CPM at $16.47 in July 2026, down 12.7 percent from July 2025 and the deepest trough in its 13-month series. June was up 16.5 percent year over year. That is a sign flip inside one month, while Meta's earnings say the average price per ad rose 12 percent. No two sources agree on even the direction right now.
Both can be true at once: Meta's number is a global average pulled up by ad performance, and its own filing credits impression growth from lower-monetizing surfaces with holding prices down. The community threads reconcile it the hard way: one August account watched CPMs fall from EUR 60 to EUR 7 while CTR collapsed from 3.5 to 0.85 percent. Cheap impressions, worthless traffic. Community reports in the window ran from CPA doubling to 4.7x days inside the same week, and the subreddit's own weekly census dates the slump to July 29, the day the new ranking system was announced. Correlation, not causation, but worth an annotation.
What to do: benchmark against your own trailing months. If your CPMs fell and results fell with them, check the placement breakdown for a shift toward low-intent surfaces before you rewrite creative that was never the problem.
The July calendar, audited
Last month's edition put dates in your calendar. Holding ourselves to them: the August 6 breakdown change shipped (above). Muse Image did not reach Advantage+; Meta kept it in the future tense on the July 29 earnings call, and the "image generation adoption more than doubled" stat belongs to the older stack. HubSpot support in Instant Forms appointment booking, promised for early August, is still listed as planned; Calendly and HighLevel remain the only live schedulers. Location fees stand at the same six countries; the fee reduces your monthly invoicing credit line and never appears in Ads Manager metrics, so Amount Spent will not match your invoice. And the verified-advertiser push toward 90 percent of revenue has had zero official mentions since March, including the entire earnings call. Two of five promises kept.
Dates to put in your calendar
| Date | What happens | Who cares |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-Sept 2026 | Meta's AI assistant becomes the primary developer support channel | API and tool builders |
| Oct 6, 2026 | Marketing API v24.0 sunset; expired calls silently execute as v25.0 instead of erroring | API and tool builders |
| Oct 27, 2026 | v26.0 removals extend to all versions, including unversioned calls | Anyone with an API integration |
| Oct 2026 | Instant Forms appointment booking expected globally | Service-business advertisers |
| Later in 2026 | Creator Marketing Hub; Muse Image in Advantage+, still "coming weeks" | Everyone |
| Jan 2027 | Türkiye location fee drops from 5% to 2.5% | Anyone delivering ads in Türkiye |
| Feb 2027 | Ad spend disclosure to end advertisers becomes mandatory | Agencies and resellers |
That is the window. The buyers in the best shape kept their own copies of everything: spend logs, creative files, and reporting that does not trust a 200. Back in early September for everything from August 8 onward.
